What Is General Insurance?
General insurance covers everything except life: health, vehicle, home, travel, business, marine, liability.
Simple definition: you pay a premium. If the covered event happens—accident, fire, theft, illness—the insurer pays the claim. No maturity benefit, unlike life insurance.
Types of General Insurance in India
- Health: medical expenses, hospitalization (₹5k–₹15k/year premium)
- Vehicle: car/bike damage, third-party liability (₹2k–₹15k/year)
- Home: building + contents protection (₹20k–₹75k/year)
- Travel: trip cancellation, medical abroad (₹500–₹3k/trip)
- Business: fire, liability, key person (varies)
- Marine: cargo in transit (₹10k+)
- Liability: professional indemnity, public liability
General Insurance vs Life Insurance
General insurance: annual premium, covers specific risks, pays only if the event happens, no maturity benefit.
Life insurance: long-term premium, covers death risk, may pay a maturity benefit (endowment/whole life).
Regulation
All general insurance in India is regulated by IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority). Every insurer must follow IRDAI guidelines on claims, pricing and coverage.
But IRDAI only sets the floor. Your exclusions, sub-limits and deductibles come from your specific policy. Generic advice ends here—check what YOUR policy actually says.
